September Wrap Up & October TBR

 

        I'm a little late, but to be honest, uni has been keeping me so busy I didn't even realize it was October and that I hadn't posted this yet until today. Unfortunately, I had to change my Reading Goal on Goodreads from 50 to 40 books. I'm upset but it is what it is. I literally have almost no free time anymore so I've been reading fewer books than usual.

OCTOBER TBR

The Glass Castle
     Saw the movie recently and loved it. A family friend lent me the book and I'm already halfway through it. Might do a book + movie review once I'm done.

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever. 

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

The Death Cure
    The trailer came out and I've been putting off reading this book for far too long. Let's just say I got spoiled (if you've read the book, you know which spoiler I'm talking about) for something I really wish didn't happen. But oh well, here I go.

Book Review: As You Wish

     Hi everyone! I got another book that was sent to me by the publisher to review! The synopsis of this one really intrigued me. I had never read anything like it before. Plus, the cover is pretty!

     The story follows Eldon on the month of his 18th birthday. The chapters count the days down as it gets nearer to the day he will make his birthday wish. And in Madison, those wishes do come true. However, Eldon has no idea what he wants, and the book is about his journey to figure it out. 

     Aside from the synopsis and the cover, once I opened the book, the first sentence caught my attention immediately. It is short and simple, but it makes you wanna know more. The last sentence was great too! I really liked Chelsea Sedoti's writing style, it kept me interested throughout the book.

     The story was nice and the whole "wish" thing was a really cool concept. My favourite things were the little insert chapters that told people's wish stories. I really liked getting to know the reasons each made the choice they did. I also liked the characters, although Eldon could be really annoying and stupid at times. Merrill and Nori were cool. 

     Despite reading the whole book, I still don't understand why it was so hard for Eldon to choose something. And I personally don't agree with what his wish ended up being, and I didn't really like the ending. However, the book was entertaining and it was a cool "small town mystery" story. 

    So, I recommend this book if you're looking for a nice quick read, but nothing that you will get too invested on. The book comes out on January 1, 2018. Thank you Sourcebooks Fire for sending me this book to review.

July Wrap Up & August TBR

        Look who actually read all the books that were on her TBR for July!!! I had hoped to read a little bit more since it's summer, but I've been doing some other stuff so I didn't really have as much time as I thought I would. Anyways, here they are!

1- The Trials of Apollo - The Dark Prophecy (3.5/5)
          The second book in the Trials of Apollo series finally came out! Not gonna lie, I didn't enjoy this one as much as I did the first one. The plot wasn't as intriguing, and it felt a little bit boring and monotonous at times. I still loved Rick's writing and the humour, but I was expecting a little bit more. I had hoped to see more old characters returning, there were some, but not enough to satisfy me. The ending though left me quite intrigued and I can't wait to read the next one.

AUGUST TBR

The Dream Thieves
        Couldn't help myself and ended up buying the second and third book in the Raven Cycle series!



Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Book Review: Autonomous

Hi, everyone! Today I have my second review of an ARC! (Advanced Reader’s Copy) Look how awesome that cover is!

Right from the start, I thought the synopsis of this book was very intriguing. Technology in the future is often represented in movies and books, and the path the story will take depends on the creator’s interpretation of whether it will be beneficial or not. Most of the times, AIs (Artificial Intelligence) take a dark turn in such adaptations, and it was no different in the book Autonomous by Andy Marino. 

The story follows four teenagers after one of them, William, wins a driverless car in a contest. They go on a road trip, but what they don’t know is that the car knows more about them than they’d like, and the way it will use that information will take a surprising turn. 

Well, this was definitely an interesting read. Seeing how Otto (aka the Autonomous car) evolved by being around the four characters was almost scary. And the way it thought it was using the secrets of the characters to help them was insane. I like how they were on a road trip, so their surroundings affected the story and made it more entertaining. The beginning of the book was a bit slow, but it picked up the pace as soon as the teens left in the Driverless car. 

Although the idea for the story sounded really cool, it was not developed to its full potential. There were quite a few scenes that made little sense and were irrelevant to the story, like the part where they play the game with those other people. It was also really hard to picture certain things, especially the car. The descriptions could have definitely been better to help the reader visualize things. I also didn’t understand how Otto made the characters see things, particularly Christina. 

I also wish the characters were different. They were all unlikeable and not really interesting; except William, who was the nicest one, but appeared to have the least “screen time” than any of the other characters, even though the synopsis made it sound like he was the protagonist. They were all really messed up too. Their issues were weirdly developed and were kind of too dark for the 14+ recommended age. I wish their secrets were a little more different because there were so many possibilities for Otto to use them against them. However, the author did do a good job at times where he would give redeeming qualities to the characters and you would almost begin to like them, but then you would realize that their negative traits overpowered the good ones.

So sadly, I wouldn’t recommend this book unless the description really makes you want to read it. This novel will be published on November 14, 2017. Thank you Freeform (Disney Book Group) for sending me this book for review.

          Well, this is bad... Just a little bit. I have an excuse though! So much happened this last month: There were finals, I graduated high school, went on a trip with my best friends... I had other things to worry about, not that reading isn't important, but still. 

1- Dragonsong (4/5)
         I read this book for my book club and I really enjoyed it! I rarely read fantasy books like this, so I can't really compare to others... But this book was so easy to read and I quite liked the author's writing style. The story brings out that desire to see actual dragons and to own one. The main character was a likeable girl. I recommend it if your looking for a small fantasy book, particularly if you, like me, aren't very familiar with the genre.

         I actually started reading this last month, and got half way through it. So I'm gonna count it as a wrap up for this month. Anyways, super excited to dive back in this awesome world and see what awaits for Apollo this time.

The Raven Boys 
       Didn't get to read it last month even though it was on my TBR for June. Hopefully I'll get to it in July.

       Very sweet book! I love Dashti (the protagonist) and how strong she is! This is more of a middle grade book but it's still worth reading if you're looking for a simple fairy-tale-retelling-feel book.

     Kinda relatable in some aspects. Definitely was expecting more. The story was a bit boring but I guess it's more realistic than some. 

4- Carry On (5/5)
    I loved this book so much!!! I have to write a full review on this because I just have so much to say!

5- Near + Far (1.5/5)
    I read this book for my Creative Writing class book club and I honesly did not like it at all. This is a short stories book, and I'm not a big fan of books like these (probably because I've never read one where all/most of the stories were good). Some of the stories were okay but overall they were super confusing and had potential to be better, I actually started this in March but I read most of it last month so here it is. 

MAY TBR

Everything, Everything 
    
   Ended up reading this on the first two days of this month. A review will be coming out on Sunday!

     I'll be rereading this 11th book in The House of Night series so that I can refresh my mind as to what happened in the book so that I can read the final book.

1- Oblivion (3/5)
    I read Obsidian almost 3 years ago, and I haven't really continued on with the series even though I wanted to... So when I saw that the ebook for Oblivion, the series from Daemon's point of view, was really cheap, I decided to buy it and see if by reading it, it would maybe get me more excited to read the other ones. To be honest, I don't think it was very well written. I don't really like some of the stuff that happened or how the relationship between Katie and Daemon form, but this is almost like a guilty pleasure type thing. I find it entertaining even though I don't think it is necessarily good.

4- The Clockwork Scarab (3/5)
     I've never read a steampunk book before so it was quite interesting to read this one. I liked that it had to badass female protagonists! However, I had a lot of problems with it. I didn't see any chemistry between any of the characters, and the plot was kinda all over the place. A lot of things were introduced/mentioned but not really resolved. I'm guessing most of it was to introduce topics that will be bigger on the other books, but that bothered me a bit. I love the cover and the cover under it. I'm not sure if I'll continue one with the series...

Cinderela Pop
   
     This is a book written by a Brazilian author and I'm not sure if it had been published anywhere else. But I'm excited because it is a retelling of Cinderella, and it's part of a series of retellings and I love the other two books.

Essa princesa pop morava com os pais em um castelo enorme de onde via toda a cidade. Todas as noites ela olhava pela janela, onde ficava admirando a vista e sonhando... com um príncipe que ainda não conhecia.

Porém um dia o castelo de Cintia desmoronou e com ele tudo à sua volta. Desiludida, ela deixou de acreditar em romances e teve que reconstruir cada parte de sua vida, sem deixar o mínimo espaço para o amor.

Ela só não contava com um detalhe... Havia mesmo um belo príncipe em sua história. E tudo que ele mais queria era descongelar o coração da nossa gata (nada) borralheira!

The Princess Bride 

      This is my Book Club's pick of the month. To be honest I have never actually seen the movie so this is gonna be interesting. 

What happens when the most beautiful girl in the world marries the handsomest prince of all time and he turns out to be...well...a lot less than the man of her dreams?

In short, it's about everything. 

Wormwood 
  
    This actually was my cousin's book and she gave it to me. To be honest, it is not the type of book I would ever pick up to read if I didn't have it in the first place. It's been sitting on my shelf for more than a year and I just picked its name out of my TBR jar so I guess I read it. 

In 1756 London, Agetta Lamian fears the end of the world is near. She's the housemaid of Dr. Sabian Blake, who recently acquired a legendary book said to unlock the secrets of the universe, and overhears his prediction that a comet called Wormwood is headed toward London.

January Wrap-Up and February TBR

Happy New Year everyone!! I hope all of you get to read amazing books this year! I plan on reading 50 books in 2017, the same goal I set for myself for last year. The month of January started well, I read the three books that were on my TBR for the month! Here they are:



1- Night 
    
   I don't really want to rate this book since it's a true story and all. I don't feel comfortable doing so.
But I can still say that this was a very well written book. With a good pace and, although really sad, super interesting as well. The ending felt a bit rushed compared to the rest of the story, but I learned a lot about the terrible thing that was the Holocaust, from someone who was in a concentration camp.


2- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - The Original Screenplay (5/5)

      It was absolutely amazing to read the screenplay of this incredible movie. I have never read a full screenplay before, so it was very insightful and really cool to see how the movie came to life from this script. I love the cover and the little illustrations in it. I hope she publishes the screenplays of the next movies in the series as well. 




3- Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor (4/5)
     
   As some of you know, I am not the biggest fan of Magnus Chase. (I have a review of the first book if you wanna check it out) I went to Rick Riordan's book tour for the Hammer of Thor and it was really cool. I definitely liked this one more than the first. I've moved on from my initial shock of comparing it to the Percy Jackson series. I know I shouldn't compare them! But I can't help it! This novel was funny and entertaining through out. Unfortunately it wasn't one of those books where I can't put it down. I have to admit I spent one or two days without even opening it. But overall it was a good read and I recommend it if you are a Riordan fan. 


FEBRUARY TBR

Oblivion
   I read Obsidian almost three years ago (I can't believe it's been that long!) when I got a free ebook copy. I saw this recently for a very cheap price on Kindle, so I bought it. It is Obsidian, but from Daemon's point of view. I have yet to read the next books in the series. Hopefully by reading this one, I will get excited to read the rest.

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it. 

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

Code Name Verity
    This is my Book club's book of the month and I quite excited to read it. I've been quite interested in reading World War II related books recently, and I've heard a lot of good things about it!


That's what you do to enemy agents. It's what we do to enemy agents. But I look at all the dark and twisted roads ahead and cooperation is the easy way out. Possibly the only way out for a girl caught red-handed doing dirty work like mine - and I will do anything, anything to avoid SS-Hauptsturmführer von Linden interrogating me again.

He has said that I can have as much paper as I need. All I have to do is cough up everything I can remember about the British War Effort. And I'm going to. But the story of how I came to be here starts with my friend Maddie. She is the pilot who flew me into France - an Allied Invasion of Two.

We are a sensational team.

Anna and the French Kiss
    I have been wanting to read this book for so long! I just picked its name out of my TBR jar (yes, I made a jar. I have too many unread books on my shelves, I need a way to finally force myself to read them), and I'm so glad I did so because I've been feeling like reading a romance contemporary for a while now.


Can Anna find love in the City of Light?

Anna is happy in Atlanta. She has a loyal best friend and a crush on her coworker at the movie theater, who is just starting to return her affection. So she's less than thrilled when her father decides to send her to a boarding school in Paris for her senior year.

December Wrap Up & January TBR

        Hi guys! Well, as you can see, I only read two books in December (even though I was planning to read four books), but that was because I was kinda busy during the break (aka binge watching Jane the Virgin, omg that show is a-m-a-z-i-n-g). But that's okay.

1- Prodigy (4.5/5)
         I really liked this book! It was my favourite of the trilogy. I was kinda iffy about Legend, but this book definitely picked up the pace and made me more into the world building, the characters, and the plot. Definitely recommend continuing with the series if you have read the first book.

         Quite an interesting final book for a trilogy. Lots of stuff happened and after reading it I was finally certain that I really like Marie Lu's writing style. I wasn't sure at first, but now I can't wait to read her other books!

     Finally reading this book. Can't wait to be able to compare it to the other Holocaust book that I read in October.

         I can't wait to finally read this! I loved the movie and I feel like reading the screenplay is going to be so interesting!

        After getting this book  signed by Rick Riordan himself, I can't wait much longer to finally read the second book on the Magnus Chase series!
