Book Review: My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories

If you love holiday stories, holiday movies, made-for-TV-holiday specials, holiday episodes of your favorite sitcoms and, especially, if you love holiday anthologies, you’re going to fall in love with MY TRUE LOVE GAVE TO ME: TWELVE HOLIDAY STORIES by twelve bestselling young adult writers, edited by international bestselling author Stephanie Perkins.

Rating: ★★.5

First of all: Isn't this book cover one of the prettiest covers you've ever seen??? IT'S SO PRETTY!!!  I got this book for Christmas and I was very excited about it. I, unfortunately, gave it 3 stars on Goodreads but actually I give it 2.5. While reading this book I remembered something: I don't like short stories. When they are good, I want more and it is not enough because it is a short story, and when they are bad (usually, in my opinion) it's because there's not enough story to create a plot and to follow the stages of a story to the end. When I started reading My True Love Gave To Me, I decided to rate each story by itself, but in a different way, so that it would be easier to rate it on 5 stars at the end. There are 12 stories, and only 5 stars. 5 divided by 12 is approximately 0.4. After finishing each story I would give it a 0.4 or 0. It was my overall rate for the story, I didn't evaluate each aspect of the story, I only gave 0.4 if I liked it and 0 if I didn't. The review below will contain spoilers and you can see which ones I liked and the ones that I didn't.

SPOILERS BELLOW

 1- Midnights - by Rainbow Rowell (0.4/0.4)
I think this story is really cute. I like the characters and the fact that it showed every New Year's Eve that Mags and Noah spent together since they've meet till their first kiss. So cute!!! I loved it.

2- The Lady and the Fox - by Kelly Link (0/0.4)
The whole thing was really weird. I didn't like it. And at the end there was no explanation at all, and everything was just nonsense. I kind of liked Miranda and Daniel. If the story was about their relationship, I would've liked it better.

3- Angels in the Snow - by Matt de la Peña (0/0.4)
At the end I wasn't really impressed with the whole thing, I expected a bit more of romance. It was a nice story but I don't think there was any special thing that would make me rate it 0.4 instead of 0. It is definitely not a bad story, it's just not of my liking.

4- Polaris is Where You'll Find Me - by Jenny Han (0.4/0.4)
I found the whole Santa Claus has a daughter thing very interesting. I like her name, Natalie. I've never read a story like it before. I also wanted an actual romance between Natty and Flynn, because they are cute. And I don't think Natty and Lars had a connection or anything, so I did not like the ending.

5- It's a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown - by Stephanie Perkins (0.4/0.4)
I loved this story so so so so much!!! It is my favourite one of all. There was romance (which I loved), awesome characters (Marigold and North <3 <3 <3), and a nice story (how North was helping Marigold to organize her home). I love when characters have nice different names and North can sound a bit weird for a guy but I think it's awesome! It, somehow, suits him! And he was extremely cute and I could relate him with a cute boy from my school so that was a bonus ;).

6- Your Temporary Santa - by David Levithan (0/0.4)
Did not like it. And no, it's not because there is a homosexual romance. I just didn't like the characters and the story could've been better.

7- Krampuslauf - by Holly Black (0/0.4)
My only thought about this story is: What the Hell?

8- What the Hell have you Done, Sophie Roth? - by Gayle Forman (0/0.4)
Cute story, but I didn't like it very much.

9- Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus - by Myra Mcentire (0/0.4)
Not a bad story, but when I finished reading it I realized I was bored.

10- Welcome to Christmas, CA - by Kiersten White (0.4/0.4)
First of all, I did not know that there are cities called Christmas. That must be really cool and funny. Christmas all year long. Second of all, that was an adorable little story, nothing extraordinary about it but cute and I like the characters (aka Ben <3).

11- Star of Bethlehem - by Ally Carter (0/0.4)
It's nice, but I wanted something different at the end. And I did not see any romance between Lydia and Ethan. Nope.

12- The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer - by Laini Taylor (0.4/0.4)
Such a different storyline! I think that maybe it could be turned into a great book. I like Neve, and the fact that her name means Snow in portuguese ;), and the Dreamer is cute. I also like the twins and I wish we could've seen more of them. I liked it. :)

I know that if I add all these number the answer won't be 2.5. But I changed it a bit because it's not actually that bad. Maybe I can say that I give it 3 stars. I recommend it if you like short stories and Christmas stories. :)

Sorry if there are any spelling errors! I don't speak english fluently so I apologize. :)
